HLTH 2400: Literature Review

An examination of preventative factors used to reduce vehicular deaths in adult drivers

This literature review was written for the class "Determinants of Health Behavior" with the goal of analyzing existing research on the prominent causes of motor vehicle accidents and identify effective interventions using the socio-ecological model as well as other behavioral theories. My review explored preventative strategies such as public safety campaigns and policy changes. It also considered how behavioral health factors, including peer pressure and excessive working hours contribute to driving-related fatalities. This project deepened my understanding of how cultural, social, and psychological factors interact in public health. I gained insight into how health behaviors and responses to prevention efforts vary across populations, which is valuable in healthcare settings where understanding patients' perspectives is essential. The process sharpened my critical thinking, cultural humility, and research skills. I will be able to carry into my future as a healthcare professional, particularly in understanding and addressing patients’ behaviors and safety in context.

Community Outreach: SC k-12  Cell Phone Policy

This artifact was a community outreach project that I completed with a partner to explain the benefits and rules of the new South Carolina K–12 cell phone ban to high school students and their parents. This project was for my Public Health Communications class, and my partner and I designed informative posters to be displayed in the hallways of Daniel High School in Clemson, South Carolina, and a brochure to be distributed to families. The materials highlighted the reasons behind the ban, such as reducing distractions, improving mental health, and promoting academic focus. This project was meaningful challenged me to communicate clearly and persuasively across generational and cultural lines. I gained a deeper appreciation for how health and education policies must be thoughtfully introduced to communities in order to be effective. It also helped me develop practical communication skills due to working directly with the administrators at Daniel High School.
